The Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout in Tahoe National Forest blends outdoor adventure with history. Built in 1915 and redesigned in 1963 with its now-famous 180 aluminum steps, the tower rises 8,587 feet above sea level. Visitors can reach it by hiking or jeeping to the base, then climbing the steps for panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada. A big thanks to the Missoula Helitack crew members who carefully placed large timbers up at the Skookum Butte Lookout on the Missoula Ranger District a few weeks ago. The logs were placed for the first phase of restoration of the lookout which has been happening over the past two weeks thanks to Passport In Time volunteers, the Forest Fire Lookout Association (FFLA) and Back Country Horsemen of Montana.
