TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — When Hurricane Miton arrived at Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday night, it made landfall near Siesta Key, an 8-mile-long island just west of Sarasota. In nearby Sarasota, Milton left debris-littered streets, trees toppled over on houses and a massive cleanup effort for residents and business owners.

Near the place Hurricane Milton made landfall Wednesday night, like so many of the Gulf Coast barrier islands from Sarasota to Clearwater, it was hard to tell where the damage from one storm ended and the ruin of another began.

The picture was the same — the ravages of Helene’s flooding on the contents of homes and the giant felled trees from Milton’s winds.

The onslaught of Milton’s damaging winds and torrential rains will be a concern through the overnight and well into Thursday. As of 11PM, Milton’s dangerous storm surge continued to impact the Port Charlotte area, Punta Gorda, Bradenton, and Sarasota areas.

Hurricane Milton has made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 storm near Siesta Key in Sarasota County. Milton is bringing powerful winds, deadly storm surge and flooding Wednesday along much of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Damage to homes, tree debris and piles of sand that washed up along coasts are the main complaints. No fatalities have been reported.

Siesta Key officially reopened on Friday, allowing residents and business owners to return to the Sarasota County barrier island where Hurricane Milton made landfall.
