Detroit's J.T. Compher made it 1-0 on a tipped shot in front of Predators' goaltender Juuse Saros. Ben Chiarot sent a long shot to the net that Compher was able to redirect into the net - and he did so without getting his stick above the net, which would have been a disallowed goal.

The Predators took 42 shots on a 37-year-old journeyman goalie, yet were unable to break through as the offense works out the kinks.

It’s a similar story for the Preds’ other big offseason acquisition, Jonathan Marchessault. The former Golden Knight is now wearing a gold of a different hue, and had a solid first game as a Pred, with a pair of assists in Nashville’s opening loss to the Dallas Stars. (Stamkos was held without a point, but picked up two penalty minutes.)
