After winning a national championship in the discus as a junior last season, Beistle, a Big Rapids High School grad, defended her title and set a Division-II championship meet record with a throw of 65.05 meters. Senior teammate Maggie Stevenson (East Jordan) was the runner-up with a personal-best throw of 55.64 meters.

The track and field state championships get underway on Friday for the Class 6A, 5A and 4A schools at Hayward Field in Eugene. Carmel’s 4x100 relay team of Becca Belanger, Norris, Cebalo and Grande Rosas set a school record (47.39 seconds). Norris won the long jump (17-7) and 200 meters (25.05), Pollert won the 3,200 (10:36.69), Taylor won the 800 (2:13.60) and Belanger (12.38) won the 100.
