At launch, Threads DMs will support one-on-one chats, preset emoji reactions, the ability to report spam, and mute DMs (as on Instagram). Other features, like group messaging, inbox filters, and more advanced message controls,

"We've seen increasingly, really over the past year, that people are building new connections on Threads and that they're building out an interest graph that looks different from their Instagram graph.

Meta says that initially people will only be able to send messages to users who already follow them or mutual followers from Instagram, though it plans to roll out more customizable inbox controls in a later update.
