Fox News Digital spoke with CBS insiders who question the timing of the network's shocking decision to cancel "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" next year.

Colbert and Oliver both broke out on The Daily Show during Stewart’s first tenure, while Meyers and Fallon spent five years working together on Saturday Night Live. Then there’s Kimmel, who has happily guested on just about every other host’s show, and will no doubt show up on The Late Show sometime soon.

Colbert secured his reign by being one of Trump’s sharpest, brashest critics, a standing many see as the real reason that CBS is shutting down “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” at the close of the 2025-2026 television season.

As you’ve likely heard, CBS — which is owned by Paramount — has decided to cancel “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Per Reuters, the program is the most-watched late-night show on U.S. broadcast television. However, it will end its 10-year run in May 2026, with the show being retired altogether.
