Hazy skies descend over the New York City area again on Tuesday, re-upping some air quality alerts related to Canadian wildfire smoke. As of 9 a.m., the air quality index was 118, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The worst air quality in recent years occurred in June 2023, when the smoke became so thick it created an orange haze over the city. However, the subpar air quality has returned to the city in each of the past two summers as well, including multiple times earlier this year.

An air quality alert went into effect for the metropolitan area went out Monday at midnight and continues until midnight Tuesday.
