Some of the 800 National Guard members deployed by US president Donald Trump began arriving in the nation’s capital on Tuesday. It comes after the White House ordered federal forces to take over the city’s police department and reduce crime in what the president called — without substantiation — a lawless city.

Still unclear as the week unfolds: how visible and aggressive the federal presence in Washington would be, how it could play out, who will be targeted — and how long it might last.

He took command of the police department and deployed the National Guard under laws and Constitutional powers that give the federal government more sway over the nation’s capital than other cities. Its historically majority Black population wasn’t electing its own city council and mayor until 1973,
