Hurricane Erin exploded in strength to a Category 5 storm in the Caribbean on Saturday, rapidly powering up from a tropical storm in a single day, the National Hurricane Center said.

Hurricane Erin is projected to miss the U.S., but that doesn't mean coastal communities from Florida to New England won't see impacts.

On the forecast track, the center of Erin is expected to move just north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico over the weekend.
