Because of the way airline networks are structured – particularly at United Airlines, which runs a major hub at Newark – delays and cancellations at that airport can have knock-on effects on flights scheduled to use the same planes later in the day on other routes.
The FAA said it is reducing flight operations at Newark Airport due to equipment outages, staffing shortages and runway construction in order to alleviate delays and congestion.
The flight caps went into effect on Tuesday, but it is unclear how quickly Newark can resolve most of its operational issues.
After three days of meetings with airline executives, the Federal Aviation Administration has a proposal to reduce the number of aircraft operations at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The airport, which has suffered from staffing shortages and communications breakdowns, faces the first big weekend leading up to summer.
